New Years Resolutions and their Discontents

Another year, another resolution list. With the month coming to an end, many of us begin to reflect on our goals and intentions for the upcoming year. This reflection can quickly turn to internal criticism if we feel as though we failed in achieving our resolutions from last year (or the year before that). How can we shift our inner critic to be more compassionate about resolutions? Resolutions can offer an opportunity to share our hopes for personal growth and they can also lead to an increase in unrealistic expectations of ourselves. The beauty of personal growth is that it can happen at any time and doesn’t have to be limited to January 1 st . Rather than putting pressure on ourselves to keep a resolution, we can show ourselves grace by giving ourselves permission to look at any day as an opportunity to grow, learn, succeed, and try again.
