Moving forward when you are feeling left behind

As we approach the end of the year it’s common to reflect on our lives and assess where we are in life. We have likely had holiday gatherings with family and friends but sometimes our take away is more than just enjoyment of the holidays. Many times our reflection of our lives are driven by comparison of our situation with others around us, our own expectations, or others’ expectations of us. For many people this can be an emotional process as you come to realize you are not where you wanted or expected to be. Sometimes it may feel as though everyone else is in a different place and we’re being left behind, whether it’s coping with infertility, navigating relationships, grief and loss, or our own personal development. While it may feel as though there is no path forward, that may be anxiety, fear, sadness, or doubt talking. There is a path forward which at times may be different that what we are hoping for or expect. Here are some strategies I encourage clients to use to help them find their path toward healing, acceptance, personal growth, and progress as we step into the new year.

Embrace Self-Compassion – It’s essential to practice self-compassion. Acknowledge the emotional turmoil and the pain you’re going through. Be kind to yourself and understand that the challenges you face do not define your worth as a person.

Reflect on Your Goals – Time to reflect on your personal goals and what you envision for your future. Setting specific, realistic, and achievable objectives can help guide you towards a more fulfilling path.

Break down your goals into smaller steps – Setting small, achievable goals can make your journey more manageable. Breaking down your objectives into smaller, actionable steps ensures that progress can be measured and celebrated along the way in the new year.

Lean on Your Support Network – Lean on the support of friends and family. Communicate your feelings, concerns, and needs to those who care about you. They can provide a strong foundation of emotional support and understanding.

Embrace Change and Adaptability – The new year often brings changes and fresh beginnings. Embrace these new possibilities and experiences. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to shifting circumstances can help you move forward even when it feels like you’re stuck in a difficult situation.

Focus on Self-Improvement – Learn new skills, engage in self-care activities, or explore new interests that can boost your self-esteem and sense of progress.

Practice Patience – Important to remember that change may not occur as quickly as you’d like. Trust in the process, focus on what you have control over, and keep your eye on the growth that is occurring.

Comparing Less, Celebrating More – Avoid comparing your journey to others. Instead of comparing, focus on your personal achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Celebrate your successes as a source of motivation and hope in the year ahead.

With self-compassion, clear goals, professional support, and the ability to embrace change and adapt, you can find a path forward feeling less as though you are feeling left behind. Your journey is unique, and as you step into the new year, you have the power to shape it in a way that aligns with your values and aspirations, no matter the obstacles in your way.
