The holidays are a perfect time for high-functioning anxiety and perfectionism to rear it’s ugly head. Taming these feelings during this time is really all about expectations. When our expectations for ourselves are so high that even Joanna Gaines (who doesn’t love the Magnolia brand) can’t reach them, we are setting ourselves up for some very uncomfortable feelings. So, before the season starts, remind yourself of what the holiday’s normally bring. If every year there is chaos in the kitchen, it’s possible that this year will be the same. If the kids HATE turkey and that’s the only thing on the menu, be prepared for tears. If Uncle Pete always makes you uncomfortable, plan for it. Taming perfectionism and anxiety is not about controlling everything. It’s about being realistic about how you may feel and planning for it.
