The holidays are approaching quickly and before we realize it, it will be Thanksgiving and we’ll be sitting with family wondering why we’re there as we begin to feel triggered.
Here are three things we can all do before the holidays come to help ourselves prepare.
Identify Trauma Triggers
These might be a smell, sound, the environment, or people. Often we don’t realize what our triggers are until it happens. When you find yourself triggered, identify the trigger, remove yourself from the situation (if needed), and practice coping skills such as grounding or breathing.
Self-Care
Prior to the holidays begin a good self-care regime. Some examples include practicinge grounding techniques, mindfulness tools, or breathing. This way if you feel that your glass is becoming half empty you’ve practiced the tool enough to use it.
Set Boundaries
This might be deciding how long you will stay with family before you leave and sticking to the boundary. If you are able to, decide beforehand which family members you are comfortable being around them and use them as a “safe place.”
