Refocus on Yourself Instead of Infertility

Facing the fall season which has a tendency to be focused on the beginning of the academic school year for children and friends/family actively involved in school related activities can be particularly challenging and evoke a range of emotions for individuals experiencing infertility. Reminders in store displays, advertisements, or television shows may make avoiding your emotions about not having a child unavoidable. It is okay to acknowledge your feelings and give yourself permission to feel your emotions about wanting a child or where you are in your fertility journey.

Finding ways to channel your energy and focus can help you increase your ability to cope. Here are a few ways to help you go:

  • Engage in self-care activities that bring you joy and relaxation

  • Channel your energy into hobbies, projects, or activities that increase feelings of fulfillment, and lean on your support system.

  • Start a mindfulness practice to help keep yourself focused on the present and help reign in anxious thoughts about the future.

Equally important is to make sure to practice self-compassion throughout this process. Each person’s journey is unique, and it’s okay to seek professional help if you find your emotions becoming overwhelming. By focusing on self-care, seeking support, and being patient with yourself, you can navigate the back-to-school season while managing the emotions related to infertility.
